There are two types of commercial carpet backing: hardback and cushion
Cushion backing comes in two varieties: open-cell cushion and closed-cell cushion. Most cushion backed carpet tiles use closed-cell cushioning, which protects the carpet fibres in the short term. But over time, this type of cushioning gets broken down
by the impact of foot traffic – reducing the cushion’s shock absorption. Open-cell cushion carpet backing ‘re-inflates’ after compression, protecting carpet fibres for longer than any other type of carpet backing.
A carpet tile’s backing is critical to its performance, durability and appearance retention. The right backing will not only ensure the carpet tile remains dimensionally stable and flat on the floor, it can also provide acoustic, insulation
and sustainability benefits. That is why we recommend open-cell cushion backing as the best choice.
Different environments call for different backing solutions and making the right backing choice is an important part of the carpet specification process. Milliken-Ontera offers a range of innovative, practical and sustainable options.
The WellBAC™ range of carpet tile backing systems was developed to ensure both occupant well-being and ease of installation for the professional flooring contractor. All WellBAC™ backings are available in tile and plank format.
