What types of flooring last the longest?Depending on thickness and pile, modular carpet generally has a lifespan of around ten to fifteen years. How much wear and tear you get out of your carpet depends on the amount of foot traffic and damage it receives. Other options such as LVT flooring and laminate can last as long as 25-30 years, depending on the quality of tiles and installation. Foot traffic can vary in different educational environments, so understanding your needs and key performance characteristics that predict floor durability is key to making the right decision and investment for your facility.
How often should you replace flooring?
There are several signs to be aware of that indicate your flooring requires a change. If you have carpet - is it threadbare? Has it been badly stained from harsh use over an extended period? If you use vinyl flooring in your institution - has it begun to fade? Is there moisture damage or mould? All these factors indicate you should consider replacing your flooring for safety as well as appearance. If you haven’t already, consider an entrance flooring system for the main entrance. This type of system traps dirt, moisture and protects your flooring.
Should you use carpet or LVT in educational spaces?
The most suitable flooring option for your space depends on its purpose. For open-plan eating areas such as cafeterias, LVT is the best option for durability and easy cleaning. For communal areas such as libraries and lecture halls, carpet is a better option due to better acoustic values and its ability to absorb sound. For enhanced acoustic properties and also enhanced appearance retention v's standard carpet tiles, cushion backed carpet is something to consider.
